8.3 Operable Walls CITY OF SALINA REQUEST FOR CITY COMMISSION ACTION DATE 11/14/2005 TIME 4:00 P.M. AGENDA SECTION NO: ORIGINATING DEPARTMENT: APPROVED FOR AGENDA: 8 BICENTENNIAL CENTER ITEM NO. Page 1 3 BY: BY: Keith Rawlings ITEM: Award contract for purchase and installation of operable walls in Heritage Hall of the Salina Bicentennial Center, Project No. 05-1518. BACKGROUND: On January 24, 2005, the Salina City Commission placed three items of improvement at the Bicentennial Center into the 2005 Capital Improvement Program. Included in the projects was replacement of the operable wall currently in use in Heritage Hall. This operable wall is a series of multiple panels used in various configurations in order to divide the 18,000 sq. ft. of Heritage Hall into smaller rooms for use by smaller groups and multiple users. The existing wall was original with the building (1979) and has served us well for over 26 years. However, it has deteriorated to the point of being unable to provide the soundproofing and visual separation desired by clients. It has also begun to lose parts, particularly the trolleys (wheels or bearings) used to move the wall along the track. These parts are impossible to replace and, as a result, the wall has lost some of its stability and function. On November 8, 2005 bids were opened to replace the wall panels we currently have (base bid). At the same time, we requested alternates for the purchase of more panels to enable us to completely quarter the room (alternate #1). Purchasing more panels will necessitate the construction of wall pockets to store the panels (alternate #2). Please note that alternate #1 cannot be accepted without also accepting alternate #2. Additional alternates were requested to give us an additional single walk-through door (alternate #3) or a double walk-through door (alternate #4). Lastly, an additional $8,400 to $10,800 (depending upon which alternates are accepted) will be necessary to paint these wall panels once they are installed. This cost is not included in the bids provided by the wall contractors. Results of the bid opening are as follows: Western Architectural Claco Supply, Inc. Fireproofing Specialties, Inc.
