Thirty-three years ago, on April 11, 1968 the Congress of the United
States passed one of its most far reaching laws governing equal rights
for minorities in this country, the Civil Rights Act of 1968, which
included Title VIII, the Fair Housing Law for guaranteed equal
housing opportunity for all citizens; and
Fair Housing is not only a guaranteed right, but is also an idea that
helps us to face the many problems and challenges of the quality of
our life. Before we can surmount these problems we must first
remove the barriers that prevent us from acting cooperatively as a
people, and
we must as individuals and as a people, take our stand to make
equal opportunity for all, including equal opportunity in housing, a
reality in our community, and
the primary responsibility for this action lies with each individual
citizen of this City, and each of us can play a major role in removing
the stain of discrimination and prejudice, and
the City of Salina is fully committed to providing it's citizens with
equal opportunity in housing.
NO~(/THEREFORE, I, Alan Jilka, Mayor of the City of Salina, Kansas, do
hereby proclaim the month of April, 2001 as
FAIR HOUSING MONTH
And I urge all of our citizens to work toward a future that opens door for everyone.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, ! have hereunto set my hand
and caused the Seal of Salina, Kansas to be affixed this
2~ day of April, 2001.
Alan Jilka, Mayor
City of Salina
