Administrative Brief COMMISSION INFORMATION MEMORANDUM VOL. 27 NO.9 April 8, 2005 ADMINISTRATIVE BRIEF FROM DARRELL EASTIN: We are very pleased to inform the commission that we have received confirmation through Saline County Emergency Management that the City of Salina Fire Department is the recipient of a Department of Homeland Security Grant in the amount of $292,000. The funds have been appropriated for the purchase of a Hazardous Materials Response Vehicle. The vehicle will be manufactured by Central States Fire Apparatus of Lyons, South Dakota and is targeted for delivery in the first quarter of 2006. The Salina Fire Department has, over the past several years, worked to enhance our abilities to respond to and mitigate emergencies involving hazardous materials. Hazardous Materials Incidents encompass a wide variety of potential situations including fires, spills, transportation accidents, chemical reactions, explosions and similar events. Hazards involved may include toxicity, flammability, radiological, corrosives, explosives, health hazards, chemical reactions and combinations of factors. In 2002 the Commission supported the department in becoming a State of Kansas Regional Chemical Assessment Team (CAT). Salina Fire Department hosts the Region 3 CAT covering 13 counties in north central Kansas. Members of the department have and continue to under go extensive training to maintain certification as Hazardous Materials Technicians. It is anticipated, that with the addition of the response vehicle, the department will move to the next level of regional response as a full Hazardous Materials Response Team. The department has been able to equip the team to a desirable and capable level through assistance from the Department of Homeland Security, the State Fire Marshals Office and the Citizens of Salina.
