PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the Future of Travel will be a consistent driver of Salina, Kansas' economy and workforce; and
WHEREAS, a robust travel industry provides significant economic benefits forthe nation, generating more
than $2.6 trillion in economic output prior to the pandemic, with $1.2 trillion spent directly by travelers
in the U.S.; and
WHEREAS travel has been the foundation of a healthy workforce, serving as one of the largest private -
sector employers in the U.S., supporting 17 million jobs in prior to the pandemic; and
WHEREAS spending by travelers has aided state and local governments alike, generating $90 billion in
state and local tax revenue prior to the pandemic to support essential services and programs; and
WHEREAS Salina is rebounding in visitation, with hotel room revenue nearly at 2019 levels, after the
drastic decline of 2020; and
WHEREAS venues and events in Salina are again providing full programming to growing audiences; and
WHEREAS people are ready to GO! And Salina has an exciting experience to share whether they are here
on business, for family time, to attend a convention, enjoy a sports event, concert, theatre, or simply have
a much-needed respite; and
WHEREAS the travel industry cannot recover without the full return of in-person meetings and events, by
both domestic and international visitors; and
WHEREAS the rebound of travel will drive the rebuilding of the U.S. economy and American workforce
since, prior to the pandemic, 60% of leisure and hospitality employment was small business; and
WHEREAS the Future of Travel will prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, powering a future
that values all cultures, embraces new perspectives and reflects the faces and ideas of the full American
society; and
WHEREAS the Future of Travel will foster a faster recovery, create a more sustainable, seamless and
secure traveler experience and help to rebuild Salina, Kansas' workforce, driving us toward a more
prosperous future.
THEREFORE, I, Trent W. Davis, M.D., Mayor of Salina, Kansas, do hereby proclaim May 1-7, 2022, as
National Travel and Tourism Week in Salina, Kansas, and urge the citizens to join me in recognizing the
critical role this industry plays in our community.
