3.1 Proclamation Shop Small SaturdayPROCLAMATION
Whereas, the government of Salina, Kansas, celebrates our local small businesses and the
contributions they make to our local economy and community; according to the United States
Small Business Administration, the strengthening United States economy in recent years has
nurtured many opportunities for entrepreneurs, with the number of small businesses in the US
on the rise. In 2022, the number of small businesses in the US reached 33.2 million, making up
nearly all (99.9 percent) of US businesses. The increase in the number of small businesses in the
US in 2022 is representative of the sustained growth as it marks a 2.2 percent increase from the
previous year and an overall growth of 12.2 percent from 2017-2022; and
Whereas, small businesses currently employ 61.7 million small business employees in the US,
which makes up approximately half (46.4) of the US work force; and
Whereas, 94% of consumers in the United States say Small Business Saturday has had a positive
impact on their community, by spending money locally, it helps stimulate the local economy and
keep businesses booming within a local region; and
Whereas, 96% of consumers shop small because of the "personalized experience, unique
products or services and a sense of familiarity" the small businesses offer; and
Whereas, 59.1 million consumers plan to shop on Shop Small Saturday and are encouraged to
Shop Small ail year long; and
Whereas, 73% of consumers who reportedly Shopped Small at independently owned retailers
and restaurants on Shop Small Saturday did so with friends or family; and
Whereas, Salina, Kansas supports our local businesses that create jobs, boost our local economy,
and preserve our communities; and
Whereas, advocacy groups, as well as public and private organizations, across the country have
endorsed the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Shop Small Saturday.
Now, therefore, I, Trent W. Davis, M.D., Mayor of Salina, Kansas do hereby proclaim, November
26, 2022, as:
SHOP SMALL SATURDAY
and urge the residents of our community, and communities across the country, to support small
businesses and merchants on Small Business Saturday and throughout the year.
