3.1 Proclamation HomelessnessNATIONAL HOMELESSNESS AWARENESS MONTH NOVEMBER 2022 Whereas, the Kansas Statewide Homeless Coalition — the lead agency for the Kansas Balance of State Continuum of Care - acknowledges November as Homelessness Awareness Month; and Whereas, Homelessness Awareness Month was established as a generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities locally, it is an opportunity to encourage citizens to serve and give to others as they are able; and Whereas, each November is a month where citizens work together to share commitments, rally for honorable causes, build a stronger community, think about other people less fortunate, and recognize that hunger and homelessness continue to be a problem in the City of Salina; and Whereas, the Salina Rescue Mission and Salina Grace Foundation recognize that homelessness continues to be a serious problem for many individuals and families in the City of Salina; and Whereas, from July 2021 — June 2022, in the City of Salina, more than 900 individuals were reported as being without a home. Of those, issues that contributed to homelessness included: lack of healthy affordable housing, addiction, mental health issues, trauma, domestic violence, lack of conflict resolution skills and loss of healthy relationships; and Whereas, we must all work together to educate the community, raise awareness, reduce the stereotypes that exist around food insecurity, poverty, and homelessness, and promote an environment where men, women, and children feel understood and respected during their times of struggle; and Whereas, there are many organizations committed to sheltering, and providing supportive services as well as meals and food supplies to the homeless including: Salina Rescue Mission, Salina Grace Foundation, Ashby House, Catholic Charities, Christ Cathedral Church, CKF Addiction Treatment, Central Kansas Mental Health Center, DVACK, Salina Shares, The Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank, and The Salvation Army; and Whereas, the intent of Homelessness Awareness Month is consistent with the activities of the Salina Rescue Mission and Salina Grace Foundation. THEREFORE., BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Trent W. Davis, M.D., I/ ayor of the City of Salina, do hereby proclaim November as National Homelessness Awareness Month in Salina, Kansas. I call upon our citizens to give back and get involved with the Salina Rescue Mission, and Salina Grace Foundation in their vision of providing a pathway to independence for individuals and families in crisis.
