3.1 Proclamation Dana Adams ProjectProclamation Dana Adams Day of Remembrance WHEREAS, On March 29, 2022, President Joe Biden signed into law a bill that makes lynching a federal hate crime; there are more than 6,000 recorded lynchings in America from 1865 through 1950; and WHEREAS, the official title of the bill is The Emmett Till Anti -Lynching Act of 2022, we are here today because of a lynching in our own community; and WHEREAS, Dana Adams, a young Black African American man was tried and convicted in a court of law for an assault, he did not make it to prison. Mr. Adams was lynched in Salina, Kansas April 20, 1893; and WHEREAS, The Equal Justice Initiative, a national organization, seeks to place a historical marker in each community where a lynching has been recorded. The purpose of the marker is to acknowledge a serious wrong and educate community members; and WHEREAS, The Dana Adams Coalition of Salina has received the historical marker that will be dedicated and unveiled on Saturday June 18, 2022, at Caldwell Plaza; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and City Commissioners of the City of Salina, do hereby recognize June 18, 2022, as Dana Adams Remembrance Day and urge everyone to become more aware of the very diverse history in our own community.
