Whereas, childhood cancer remains the number one disease killer of children; more
than genetic anomalies, cystic fibrosis and AIDS combined; and
Whereas, on average, the treatment for childhood cancer is two years and can cause
serious side effects that may last a lifetime; and
Whereas, every year, more than 15,700 children and adolescents are diagnosed with
cancer. That is about 43 children each day; and
Whereas, childhood cancer occurs regularly, randomly and spares no socioeconomic
class, geographic affiliation, gender or ethnic group; and
Whereas, Childhood cancer survivors are twice as likely to suffer chronic health
conditions later in life; and
Whereas, every year over 2,500 children under that age of 20 lose their lives to
cancer, That is equivalent to 7 children every single day; and
Whereas, when a child is diagnosed with cancer the entire family is forever
affected;
Therefore, in recognition of support of the patients, families, and professionals
leading the fight against childhood cancer, I, Trent W. Davis, M.D., Mayor of the
city of Salina, do hereby proclaim September 2022 as "CHILDHOOD CANCER
AWARENESS MONTH" in Salina and recognize the gold ribbon as the symbol of
childhood cancer. I encourage all citizens to honor those young people who have lost
their lives to this devastating disease and join the fight against childhood cancer In
Salina.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto
set my hand and caused the seal of the City
of Salina, Kansas, to be affixed this 1211 day
of September, 2022.
