RE: February 26 Study Session Agenda
DATE: February 22, 2024
The Study Session on Monday, February 26, 2024 will cover two insurance related items: the State
of the Marketplace and the Draft Insurance Broker Agreement. No action will be taken, but staff is
looking for direction from the City Commission.
State of the Marketplace. The City’s property/casualty insurance broker will explain what
reinsurance treaties, inflation and catastrophic losses happening across the nation means for this
year’s insurance renewal. The City’s property and casualty insurance is set to expire on June 30,
2024. We expect to come before the City Commission in mid-June for action. Both property and
liability losses across the country and losses the City of Salina has personally experienced will
negatively affect insurance rates, premiums, values and deductibles. James Charlesworth, the
City’s insurance consultant will also be present at the Study Session to enhance the discussion.
There are very few renewal options for the City of Salina, but they will be thoroughly discussed so
the Commission can direct staff in how to move forward with our annual property/casualty insurance
renewal.
Property/Casualty Insurance Broker Agreement. As part of our comprehensive insurance
program, the City of Salina purchases insurance for exposures such as property, inland marine,
general liability, crime, etc. In order to gain access to insurers who provide such coverage, we use
an insurance broker.
The City has used Salina-based Iron Insurance Partners as our insurance broker for many years.
The current Insurance Broker Agreement is set to expire on March 31, 2024. Staff will bring this item
to the March 11, 2024 City Commission meeting for your action. The Draft Agreement has been red-
lined to reflect the Broker’s updated business name, which occurred during the contract period. The
other modification worth pointing out is staff is suggesting we change the renewal date to January 1,
instead of March 31. Staff is requesting direction on other potential modifications to the draft
contract.
