Re: Train Speeds
Dear Mayor Jilka:
Effective October 16, 2000 the maximum train speed will be increased on the Union
Pacific main line through Salina from 20 to 30 miles per hour. With recent upgrades in the track,
the increase is within the speed authorized by the Federal Railroad Administration. The signals
and circuitry are all currently capable of handling the new speeds and providing the proper
warning time to the motoring public at grade crossings without further adjustment.
'--
I bring this to your attention so that city officials are not taken by surprise by the speed
increase and have sufficient time to take any steps needed to further alert or protect the public. If
you have any questions regarding the implementation of these changes, please let me know. We
will provide the local press with notices of this change for publication.
Very truly yours,
/1f2~
