ADMINISTRATIVE BRIEF FROM YVONNE GIBBONS:
The Salina-Saline County Health Department receives grant funding from the Kansas
Department of Health and Environment for Maternal and Child Services. Three Health
Department programs are partially funded with these grant dollars.
Healthy Start Visitor - A trained, lay visitor visits all referred pregnant women and provides
information regarding pregnancy, labor and delivery, infant care, etc. She also refers them
to appropriate agencies for other services such as WIC, Maternal and Infant Program,
medical care. Through a referral process at the hospital, women who have delivered will also
receive a home visit from the Healthy Start Visitor and are also provided information
regarding post partum care, infant and child development, health concerns, etc.
Maternal and Infant ProQram - This program, a preventive health program designed to serve
pregnant and post partum high risk mothers and families, is staffed by a registered nurse and
a social worker. The goal is to improve pregnancy outcomes for the mother and infant
through education, health counseling and referrals to appropriate agencies. This work is
done through both home visits and clinic visits.
Well-child proQram - Nurses certified to do well-child exams provide well-child services to
children 0-18 years of age. The visits may include physical exam, immunizations, hearing,
vision, development screening, speech assessment, lead screening, fluoride varnishes,
health education information.
