Award of contract for Concrete Structure Rehabilitation at the Wastewater Treatment Facility, Project
No. 04-1466.
BACKGROUND:
This project involves concrete structure repair above the operating water level at the west channel of
the grit chamber and primary and secondary digester influent and supernatant boxes at the
Wastewater Treatment Facility. When the project was first identified in 2003, only the grit chamber
was thought to need these repairs. The concrete has deteriorated due to the hydrogen sulfide levels
in the raw wastewater. The turbulence or aeration process releases the hydrogen sulfide to air
above the operating water level and corrosion of the concrete occurs. The concrete repair involves
the application of a monolithic, structurally enhanced fiber-reinforced, cementitious liner with a top
coat of epoxy. The repair will provide corrosion protection against chemicals and restores structural
integrity to the structure.
The rehabilitation will include the cleaning of the structure with high pressure water; the spray
application of the acid resistant monolithic liner; and top coat with 100 mils of epoxy.

Mayer Specialty Services, L.L.C. submitted a proposal that fully complies with the project
specifications. This firm has performed similar projects for various municipalities and industries and
quality of their workmanship is excellent.
FISCAL NOTE:
Funding for this project is included in the 2004 Wastewater System Enhancements budget in the
amount of $40,000. If approved, the additional funds will be allocated from the same account, which
is made possible by savings from other projects.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Commission award the contract for the Concrete Structure
Rehabilitation at the Wastewater Treatment Facility, Project No. 04-1466 to Mayer Specialty
Services, L.L.C., Goddard, Kansas, in the amount of $49,050.00.
