Authorize Spring Clean-Up Day - 1997 (free landfill day).
Background:
The City Commission has supported in the past having one day per year for disposal of residential
trash and bulky items at the city landfill for no charge. The Solid Waste Management Committee
has also indicated their strong support for this. They will review and analyze the results of a 1997
effort, as part of their county-wide Solid Waste Plan report. The 1996 free landfill day had 505
participants bringing 234 tons of material and 504 tires.
Staff proposes setting the date for free landfill day of Sunday, May 18. A Sunday date is advisable
for risk management and financial reasons.
This Spring Clean-Up Day will be available for residential solid waste from Saline County and the
contracted counties.
If the Spring Clean-Up Day is authorized, staff will draft and advertise the times, guidelines, etc.
Recommendation:
Authorize and direct the staff to implement a Spring Clean-Up Day (free landfill day) for May 18,
1997.
