03-15-2017 Minutes MEETING MINUTES Parks & Recreation Advisory Board Wednesday, 3/15/2017 4:00 p.m. Meeting called time: 4:03 p.m. 1. Call to Order and Roll Call Doug Rudick Mark Bandre Mary Bender Melanie Hedgespeth 2. Introduction of GUESTS: Brian Herwig- Greater Salina Community Foundation grant was rewarded to Linnette Burger for her Therapeutic Recreation Program. This grant comes from the Y.W.C.A Legacy Fund which was created from the sale of the Y.W.C.A. This grant is rewarded to people that Encourage women’s growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision for peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people. Also to help children attain their greatest potential, and create an environment to assist in the physical and mental health and well-being of women and their families. Grants are restricted to Saline County, KS, and all 501(c)(3) charitable organizations, government/public entities, educational institutions, and churches will be considered. Other organizations such as for-profit entities and individuals will be considered if the request is for a charitable grant This grant money is to help with cost of her programs, supplies, and anything Linnette may need for her programming. 3. Approval of Minutes: (There was a motion to add information to the last meetings minutes) Motion: Doug 2 nd Mary (motion passed) 4-0 6. New Business: a) Travis Scheele promoted to Recreation Superintendent- Informational Travis was offered the position as Recreation Superintendent for the Salina Fieldhouse. He stated it is very rewarding to provide for the community. He is currently educating current staff on how to take over and run certain athletic programs. b) Rick Schriner, Shane Herron, and Steve Fowler were 3 of our facility operations employees that just got their Building Operations Certification in Topeka Kansas. They work under Troy Reinert. 7. Old Business: Mary stated that she has heard concern about the muddy areas in the dog park, it was suggested a different class be put in to help with that. Rick stated that the middle pod was recen tly seeded and needs time to take before it is opened. An irrigation system is being looked at, along with other blends of grasses that are meant more for higher traffic areas. There is currently 1 North pod a nd 1 South pod open at Barkley Park. Doug stated he drove by the dog park one day that it was very windy, and it was full of people. 8. General Announcements/Discussion: The park board discussed the letter to the editor about the dog park, and the possibility of separating dogs by size or energy level. The master plan was also discussed briefly, and the potential of it being presented at the next meeting. 9. Adjournment – Motion: Mary 2 nd Melanie. 4-0 Meeting adjourned at 4:36 p.m.
