09-24-1999 Minutes Convention and Tourism Advisory Committee Friday, September 24,1999 Minutes Board Members Present: Marlene Leister, Brenda Smith, Roger Steinbrock, David Miller, Bette Timmel Board Members Absent: David Fanshier, Jennifer Sturges, Monte Shadwick, Elizabeth Feist, Gerald Cook Guests/Staff Present: Keith Rawlings - Bicentennial Center; Tom Hughes - Kansas Cagerz; Sylvia Rice, Tiffany Greene Chamber The Minutes of the August meeting were reviewed. Aue:ust Financial Statement The August 31 Financial Statement was reviewed. Kansas Simply Wonderful Dav Sylvia stated that Kansas Simply Wonderful Day at the Kansas State Fair on Saturday, September 18 was a success. She did not work the event this year, but has recei.ved reports from the new chairperson that for the most part all went well. Rainy weather was a problem during part of the day, but the crowds were good. The winners of the $4500 Fun-Pack-For-Four were a family from McPherson. Hospitality Orientation Program Sylvia and Tiffany updated the committee on the hospitality orientation program. The first session will be held Wednesday, October 6. Titled "A Walk on the Wildside", this session will feature Rolling Hills Refuge and Smoky Hill Vineyards & Winery. To date, 25 registrations have been received. They hope to have 46 participants this first time out. Jam & Slam '99 Tiffany reported on the Jam & Slam '99 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament that begins on Saturday September 25th at 9:00 a.m. during Santa Fe Day. She said they are still looking for women's and there are no 10 & under teams. To date, there are 25 teams registered to compete. TIAK Annual Conference Sylvia reported that both she and Tiffany will attend the Travel Industry Association of Kansas (TIAK) Annual Tourism Conference, October 11-13 in Wichita. The event is held in conjunction with the Kansas Lodging Association (KLA). Meetings of each group's membership, committees, and educational seminars make up the agenda. Kansas Adventure Times Three (KA TT) Sylvia gave an update on what is happening with the Adventure Times Three coalition. Adventure Times Three will participate in four GLArner trade shows being held in surrounding states. (Denver, Omaha, Oklahoma City, Kansas City). A tear-off map featuring the full itinerary is being designed to distribute at those shows. NJCAA Uvdate Tiffany reported that plans continue for the NJCAA Women's National Basketball Championship, March 14-18, 2000. She announced that the YWCA of Salina has agreed to serve as the official pre-tournament ticket outlet for the event. They will receive 20% commission on their ticket sales. Ticket prices have been lowered to $5 each to encourage attendance. An initial meeting has been held with Eli Stephens of Blue Beacon to investigate a marketing/sponsorship proposal to feature the event on Green Lantern cups. More information will follow. Division Uvdate Sylvia and Tiffany reported on the variety of events and conventions that have kept the division busy in September. Major time was spent on the Wheatland Cluster Dog Show in particular. This event was held over the same weekend as the Kansa Cat Show and Cutting Horse Show. The Committee reviewed the list of upcoming events. Other Business Torn Hughes of the Kansas Cagerz provided the group with a Cagerz "newsletter", and reported that the sponsorship drive for next season is underway. Keith Rawlings, Bicentennial Center, reported that an Open House is to be held on September 25th at the Bicentennial Center to celebrate the Center's 20th Anniversary. He also reported that the new basketball floor for the Arena has been ordered. The meeting adjourned at 8:35 a.m.
