Approve project and authorize the setting of a date to receive bids for construction at the City of
Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill (Project No. 97-1077).
Background
In order to provide additional landfill volume, it becomes necessary to construct a third lined
solid waste cell and provide related surface drainage. This construction contract also involves
the construction of an 40' x 40' administration building a $0% the expansion of thc existing
convenience area; and erection ora 30' x~3C equipment storage building. Due to recent approval
by KDHE to allow vertical expansion of the present two (2) lined solid waste cells, final closure
operations will not commence on these cells'tmtil 2000.
The administration building will provide a conference/training room, two offices for the
supervisory staff and restroom facilities for employees and for the public. Thc equipment
storage building will provide protection for the compactors and loaders during adverse weather
conditions. Currently, four (4) spaces arc available at the convenience area for utilization by
customers with small quantities of waste material. This project will add two (2) additional
spaces and improve the ingress/egress traffic patterns.
The firm of Camp, Dresser and McK~ee, Inc. provided design services for the preparation of
construction drawings and specifications. CDM will also provide thc bid letting and
construction related services. Engineering estimates for this project have not been finalized at
this time but the costs for this construction phase will be-approximately two million dollars.
Construction activities will be completed in 1998.
Recommendation:
We recommend the City Commission authorize thc DirectOr of Utilities to set thc date to receive
bids for the Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill (Project No. 97-1077).
