Authorization to purchase 2000 yard waste poly carts for Sanitation Division.
BACKGROUND:
On May 4, 1998, the City Commission approved a solid waste venture grant for the City Sanitation
Division to initiate a new program to provide yard waste poly carts for our current sanitation
customers. The venture grant anticipates the diversion of yard waste from the city landfill by use of
the poly carts and disposal of the material at a private composting facility in Saline County. This
pilot program offers 2000 carts to our current sanitation customers at a one-time cost of $15 on a
first-come, first-served basis. Our water customer accounting department began taking orders on
Tuesday, May 5, 1998 and by Thursday, May 7, 1998 the 1300 orders had been filled.
City staff has received three quotations from vendors of this type of 60 gallon poly cart. The most
qualified, cost-effective quotation was received from Ameri-Kart Corporation of Goddard, Kansas
in the amount of $44.00 per cart delivered to Salina within 60 days of the order. This company
currently provides our 90-gallon trash poly carts as well. They offer a long track record of quality
products and service to Salina.
If approved, the carts will be financed with $29,333 each from the venture grant, fees from customers
and the general fund.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Commission authorize staff to purchase 2000 yard waste poly carts
from Ameri-Kart Corporation in the amount of $88,000.
