Building Valuation COMMISSION INFORMATION MEMORANDUM VOL. 26, NO.3 ITEM OF INTEREST: January 23, 2004 The Salina Fire Department received a grant from the Kansas Dept. of Health & Environment funded by the National Centers for Disease Control & PrHvention. Total dollar amount is $3,500 to be used to purchase educational and installation material and 500 10-year Lithium battery smoke alarms. These will be installed in the homes of senior citizens and pre-school age children (our highest risk groups). This grant project will be coordinated by Debbie Weaver, Public Education Specialist and in cooperation with the Salina Area United Way, Head Start, Volunteer Connection and the Saline County Commission on Aging. Through January 2004 to December 2004, this grant will help to make some homes safer from fire death and injury. ADMINISTRATIVE BRIEF FROM MIKE MORGAN: Buildina Services Construction activity continued to be strong during the second half of 2003. Although total valuation is less than previous years, some of this drop-off is attributable to the completion of the school construction program. We are pleased to see single family construction increased 27% from 2002 to 2003, bringing us back to the 2000 level. It is a good economic sign when single family home starts exceed 100. Remodeling activity has been strong for the past few years and continued in 2003. Total Valuation - 2000 ($99,462,211) 2001 ($74,250,045) 2002 ($62,581,334) 2003 ($46,213,139) Total Siingle IFamily Helme Permits -1999 (98) 2000 (105) 2001 (84) 2002 (85) 2003 (108) Department activities include outreach to affected customers by holding several meetings with local architects, plumbing, mechanical and electrical contractors and the Salina Homebuilders Association. Staff is continuing to work with contractors, design professionals and the Building Advisory Board to evaluate new model codes to determine if the City of Salina should adopt them, as well as what local amendments to the current codes should be continued. It is anticipated that the proposed code changes will be presented to the City Commission by Summer 2004. CIM Page 2 Consistent with our goal to abate long-term nuisances and blighted buildings, staff will present to the City Commission in January a new list of dangerous structures. We are proud of our efforts to either remove the structures or ensure that they are rehabilitated. MONDAY'S MEETING 1. Enclosed are other items on the agenda.
