I~HEREAS, exceptional children include the visually impaired, the hearing
impaired, the gifted, the mentally retarded, the learning disabled, and
the emotionally disturbed; and,
~,~EREAS, the purpose of education for these children is to provide them
with the capabilities to cope and to adjust to their own individual
limitations; and,
I~{EREAS, exceptional children constitute a special group of individuals
with needs that are more similar than dissimilar to the needs of the general
population; and,
WHEP~AS, exceptional children hold a special place in our community both
in terms of need and of the uniqueness that they can provide to others;
and,
WHEREAS, the first week in P~y, May 3 through May 7, is National Exceptional
Children's Week:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gerald Simpson, Mayor of the City of Salina, hereby
proclaim May 3 through May 7, 1976, to be "Exceptional Children's Week" in
Salina.
