ITEM:
Consideration of bids for Breathing Air Containment and Cascade System.
BACKGROUND:
The fire department currently has low-pressure air cascade systems in service, which are used to fill
the breathing air bottles for firefighter air packs. This is an upgrade to meet National Institute of
Safety and Health (NIOSH) standards. The proposed high-pressure bottles will greatly increase our
capacity for breathing air storage. In addition, we will provide an approved safety containment
system. The containment is a steel cabinet in which the breathing air bottles are placed when being
filled. This protects the employee from fragmentation injury in the event of bottle failure.
The upgraded systems will be placed in service at Stations 1 and 3.
FISCAL NOTE:
Included in the 2003 Vehicles and Equipment Sub-CIP is $20,000 for this upgrade. The bids are
very reasonable and allow us to select a vendor bid considerably less than the original estimate.
RECOMMENDATION:
Authorize purchase of High Pressure Air Breathing Cascade and Containment System from Air &
Fire Systems in the amount of $15,806.00.
