4.1 Fair Housing MonthWHEREAS, April 2013 is recognized as the 45th anniversary of the passage of Title VII of
the Civil Rights Act of 1968, better known as the Fair Housing Act.
WHEREAS, The Fair Housing Act has helped open doors of opportunity for countless
individuals and families since it states there shall be no discrimination in the
acquisition, ownership possession, or enjoyment of housing.
WHEREAS, More work remains in our struggle to achieve equality and justice. It is
necessary for housing discrimination enforcement agencies, housing investigatory,
consumer agencies and housing providers to work together to ensure that every
person residing in Salina, Kansas is provided decent, affordable, and accessible
housing of their choice without fear of discrimination.
WHEREAS, All Americans should know their housing rights and responsibilities, and the
Salina Human Relations Commission, in partnership with the U. S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development, will work hard to eliminate discrimination in
housing in Salina, KS.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Norman M. Jennings, Mayor of the City of Salina, Kansas, DO
HEREBY PROCLAIM the month of April 2013, as
I challenge the people of Salina, Kansas to learn more about their rights and responsibilities under
the Fair Housing Act and the roles they can individually and collectively play to fight housing
discrimination.
