Administrative BriefCITY COMMISSION INFORMATION MEMORANDUM April 18, 2013 ADMINISTRATIVE BRIEF FROM JACK ROLFS COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT The Computer Technology Department continues to focus on enhancing the City's ability to provide public services through the use of technology. Some of the activities we have been working on, since our last update to you in December 2012 are listed below. We changed our network connectivity at Gypsum Hill Cemetery to utilize a secure Virtual Private Network Tunnel that allows them to be a part of our City network. We have done the same for Kenwood Cove, and our plans are to change out the Municipal Golf Course next. Our new Cisco Catalyst 4507 switch has arrived, and has been installed. This core switch is the heart of our network. We are still in the process of moving network segments to it, and we should complete the process within in the next month. We continue to see great interest regarding iPads. We have added several units at the Fire Department, and have recently placed five units in our Parks and Recreation Maintenance division. Technicians can now enter and update work orders in the Field, and have access to technical manuals and video conferencing when needed, without having to return to their office. iPads are still being well received by many varied types of City users. We still need to increase our network storage space and will be bringing a proposed solution to the City Commission in the near future. We have yet to receive a call requesting less disk space. We are in the process of changing our server /desktop virus protection vendor to Sophos. Sophos seems to find more viruses and malware than our previous solution and it is considerably cheaper in price. Our implementation of Sophos is 99% complete. We have put a bid out on the street to replace our Police and Fire mobile laptops. They are now five years old, and our maintenance contract ends this year. Finally, we have invested a considerable amount of time with HR, changing our twice- monthly payroll to biweekly. Sometimes it seems as if what looks to be a simple change ends up being not quite so simple after all! MONDAY'S MEETING Enclosed are other items on the agenda. If any Commissioner has questions or cannot attend the meeting, please contact me. Jason A. Gage, City Manager
