Honorable Mayor, and Respected Commissioners,

June 4, 2001
On behalf of our Board of Directors and members of our Municipal
Band, I would like to formally request the funds set aside for support
of the Municipal Band.
We have already had one public performance this season and that was
for the K- State /Salina graduation which was held on May 5 on the campus
of the former Marymount College, now home to the Kansas State Highway
Patrol. Graduation ceremonies were attended by more than 1,000 people,
as it was standing room only in what was the Big Theater in the Fine Arts
Bldg.
The Salina Municipal Band has many fine things to be proud of and to
boast, one of which is the continued support which we receive from the City.
That tradition of support has been available for a good many years. We
thank you!
One more item of importance which needs to be talked about is that of
our music director /conductor Mr. Eric Stein. Mr. Stein has been a very
important part of the music community here in Salina. As of March, 2001,
Eric has been THE Director /Conductor of the Salina Municipal Band for
(41) forty -one years! This is an extra - ordinary accomplishment and feat.
As most of you know, Eric is certainly a quiet and unassuming person,
and is not seeking public recognition for his lifetime commitment to the
music profession, other than receiving applause and congratulations for
making the Band sound so good. What I am wondering is this: Would it be
possible to honor Eric some Tuesday evening at a Band concert (a date which
we could discuss and set) and to publicly acknowledge his commitment?
I would be most appreciative if something could be worked out.
Once again, thank you for the fine support which you provide to the
Band and the financial backing which you make available each year.
Re pectfully Yours,
AIYWr
