6.4 Purchase Core Network SwitchCITY OF SALINA REQUEST FOR CITY COMMISSION ACTION DATE TIME 12/10/2012 4:00 P.M. ORIGINATING DEPARTMENT: FISCAL APPROVAL: AGENDA SECTION NO: 6 BY: COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT FINAL APPROVAL: ITEM NO: Page 1 4 BY: Jack Rolfs BY: ITEM: Replacement Core Network Switch for Computer Technology. BACKGROUND: The City is currently using a core network switch that was purchased in 2000. This core switch, the heart of our system, handles all routing of our internal network traffic, whether it is attached via wireless, wire, or fiber. Recently, we have been experiencing failures with the components of our existing core switch, and this is one vital piece of equipment that we cannot afford to have issues with. Our current core switch is a Cisco Catalyst 6509. It has served us well over the last twelve years, but it is time (actually, past that time) to replace it with a reliable unit. We are a Cisco shop and our staff understands Cisco switches. We decided to look at all options, but made it clear that we strongly prefer Cisco equipment. Any vendor, other than Cisco, would have to convince us that their products are superior, in order to get our business. We requested bids on a Cisco Catalyst 4507 switch, with eight (8) hours on-site conversion support, all beyond normal 8 am-5 pm business hours. We received two (2) bids for a replacement Cisco switch, and both are listed below. Vology ISG Technology Tampa Bay, FL Salina, KS Cisco Catalyst 4507 Core Switch, dual supervisors and $37,133.50 $43,149.10 dual power supplies Cisco SmartNet maintenance – 1 year $ 2,770.00 $ 2,366.10 Eight hours of onsite, off-hour support $ 1,560.00 $ 1,980.00 Freight $ 95.00 $ 0.00 Total $41,558.50 $47,495.20 FISCAL NOTE: This purchase is part of the 2012 Capital Improvement Program sub-CIP for Computer Technology. We allocated $50,000 for the replacement Core Network Switch this year. CONFORMANCE WITH THE STRATEGIC PLAN: This item would apply to Goal #3: The city will provide the highest quality of services, consistent with governing body direction, available resources and staff commitment to quality. COMMISSION ACTION: Staff recommends awarding the bid for the Cisco Catalyst 4507 Core Switch to Vology in the amount of $41,558.50.
