The Salina Animal Shelter is located at 329 N. Second, Salina. It is a department of the
Salina-Saline County Health Department, with the majority of the funding coming from the
City of Salina.
The Shelter has six full time employees, four of which are animal control officers. The
officers work on a rotating schedule that changes eyery week. First shift starts at 6:00 am
and the last shift ends at 10:00 p.m., with that officer taking the pager and truck home to
respond to emergency calls. Some of the calls officers respond to are house fires with
pets inyolyed, assisting the Police and Sheriffs Departments, yicious animal complaints,
wrecks on Interstate, and animals being hit by cars. The Shelter handles anything that
has to do with animals, both domestic and wildlife.
During business hours we take in unwanted animals, adopt pets, issue all the City
licenses, check the welfare of animals, do liye animal trappings for wildlife, keep the City
streets free of dead animals, and take bite reports in the county as well as the City.
Cleaning the animal pens at the Shelter is an ongoing process - starting at 6:00 a.m.,
when we are closed from 1-3 p.m. weekday afternoons and again when we close at 5:30
p.m.
The Dog Park is located behind the Animal Shelter and maintained by shelter staff. It has
posted hours and open to the public. It was solely funded by donations to the Shelter.
It is a large fenced in area for people to bring their pets and let them run off leash. It's
a great place to socialize a new pet and meet other pet owners. There are eyen dog
agility obstacles you can run your pet through. We supply pet waste pick up bags, fresh
drinking water and tennis balls! We striye to make our community safe for people and
pets.
