Approve the purchase of two (2) wastewater pumps for Wastewater Collection
BACKGROUND:
The City currently operates and maintains 59 wastewater pump stations (22 submersible and 37 dry
pit type) within the Wastewater Collection System. Preventative and routine maintenance is
completed yearly, which tends to increase the life of the pumping equipment. The life expectancy of
wastewater pumps operating in this type of service has proven to be 10 years when proper
maintenance is performed. Two wastewater pumps (one operating and one standby) are utilized to
pump the raw wastewater at Wastewater Pump Station No. 35. Wastewater Pump Station No. 35 was
installed in 1999. The two existing wastewater pumps have failed and require replacement. A spare
pump from Wastewater Pump Station No. 13 is being utilized at Station No. 35. In addition, Station
No. 35 has an overflow to Station No. 58.
In 1993, Flygt and ABS were selected as acceptable manufactures to provide submersible type
wastewater pump stations for the City of Salina. Utilizing these two manufactures, allows the City to
maintain a reduced parts inventory; the ability to interchange pumps and parts between wastewater
pump stations; allows staff to be familiar with standard maintenance procedures and allows for a
competitive bidding process.
The proposed wastewater pumps will mount into place without making any piping changes or
modifications to the electrical system. City staff will install the pumps. Delivery time for the pumps is
three months.

FISCAL NOTE:
A budget allocation of $222,000 for Maintenance Pump Stations is included in the 2012 Wastewater
Collection Operating Budget under line item 690 - 390 - 220 - 772.187, and currently has a balance of
$96,508.01. Funds ($19,968.00) are available for the replacement of the two (2) wastewater pumps.
