ADMINISTRATIVE BRIEF FROM GARY HOBBIE
DEVELOPMENT SERVICES DEPARTMENT
During the month of April, city staff assisted the North Salina Development Steering Committee
and the Care Level II Grant administrators in hosting an EPA Assistance Grant for Sustainable
Communities public open house and planning event for the residents of Salina. Three districts
in north Salina were discussed and multiple options for re-development were uncovered. These
districts were selected by the North Salina Development Steering Committee as areas where
improvement is needed. Great ideas were discussed and a report from the planning group is
expected in May. Future reports will be shared with the City Commission once the North Salina
Development Steering Committee has had time to review the results.
Development Services staff has worked wit h Serving Salina Together, The Volunteer
Connection, and United Way for the past three year s in two programs that are beneficial for
Salina. One program includes a community-wide volunteer clean up process while the second
relates to a fix-up program to repair and paint structures in need. Recently one of the programs
involved multiple community churches’ volunteers to provide another free clean-up opportunity.
st
Over 212 volunteers assembled at the Friendship Center on April 21, where they donned their
orange t-shirts and divided up into 12 clean-up groups. Each group was headed by a team
leader, truck drivers and a grou nds crew who picked up unwant ed debris from homes. The
groups worked an area west of Santa Fe, north of Republic and south of Bishop Streets.
The following statistics indicate the need for free pick up days in the community:
Approximately four hours was needed to complete the event;
Approximately 165 blocks of residential properties were in cluded in the special pick-up
day;
Thirty-five pickups and trailers were donated to be loaded with debris;
Over 150 pickup or trailer loads of materials were delivered to the staged dumpster sites;
Nine 30-cubic yard disposal contai ners awaited all the trash and debris;
Two 30-yard dumpsters of tree limbs and wood were included in the day’s total;
Two hundred, seventy cubic yards of debris we re loaded and delivered to the landfill by
Salina Iron and Metal employees;
There was 29.95 tons of debr is taken to the landfill;
A total of 375 tires that wei ghed over 23 tons were recycled;
Salvage iron taken to the recycle facility totaled 1,500 lbs.
All who worked were then fed pizza and given something to drink as a thank you for their
great efforts cleaning up the community.
All dumpsters were removed by 5:00 in the evening on the day of the Saturday clean-up;
A great success for the year!
This is the third year in which a spring clean up program has taken place. Special thanks goes
to The Volunteer Connection and Serving Salina Together staff and directors who worked an
untold amount of time completing details for a smooth project outcome. Because of the many
years of success, The Volunt eer Connection and Serving Salin a Together will oversee the
program in the years to come. Assistance fo r mapping, routing, and financial assistance with
landfill fees will continue to be provided by the City of Salina until th e program can be fully
funded independently. On a side note the three year total amount of debris collected includes:
8,000 lbs of recycled iron materials; 1,366 tires recycled; and 104.53 tons of debris has been
taken from the community. This is another gr eat example of volunt eers working in our
community making a difference.
