4.1 National Work Zone Awareness Week
WHEREAS, construction work and repairs to our roads must be done with traffic on
them, putting both motorists and workers at risk every day, and
WHEREAS, workers diligently continue to improve, rebuild, and maintain roadways so
motorists can safely and efficiently travel throughout Salina, and
WHEREAS, in Kansas during 2011, 11 people were killed and 553 people were injured
in work zone-related crashes, and
WHEREAS, nearly 90 percent of the people injured or killed in work zone crashes each
year are motorists, making work zone safety important to all citizens, and
WHEREAS, many of these fatalities and injuri es were caused by inattentive driving,
following too closely, and speeding in construction zones, and
WHEREAS, to reduce fatalities and injuries, motorists must reme mber to set aside
distractions, be extra cautious, and give work zones their undivided
attention when traveling, and
WHEREAS, safety on the roads is a shared responsibility, and we all must do our part
to keep our roadways safe, and
WHEREAS, the City of Salina is dedicated to enhancing work zone safety for both road
workers and motorists
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Norman M. Jennings, Mayor of the City of Salina, do hereby
April 23 – through April 27, 2012
proclaim the week of as
“NATIONAL WORK ZONE AWARENESS WEEK”
in the City of Salina, and I call upon all citi zens and civic organizations to acquaint
themselves with the issues involved in work zone safe ty and to recognize the
contributions which public works officials make every day to our health, safety, comfort,
and quality of life while working under these adverse conditions.
