ITEM:
Approve the purchase of four (4) wastewater pumps for Wastewater Collection.
BACKGROUND:
The City currently operates and maintains 59 wastewater pump stations (22 submersible and 37 dry
pit type) within the Wastewater Collection Syst em. Preventative and r outine maintenance is
completed yearly, which tends to increase the life of the pumping equipment. Two wastewater pumps
(one operating and one standby at eac h station) are utilized to pump the raw wastewater at
Wastewater Pump Station Nos. 15 and 29. Wastewater Pump Station No. 15 was installed in 1953
and Wastewater Pump Station No. 29 was installed in 1 965. The four existi ng wastewater pumps
have reached the end of their useful life and require replacement. The life expectancy of wastewater
pumps operating in this type of service tends to be over 30 years wh en proper maintenance is
performed.
In 1948, Smith & Loveless, Inc. was selected to prov ide three wastewater pump stations (first three
dry pit type wastewater pump stati ons manufactured by Smith & Lovel ess) for the City of Salina.
Since that time, Smith & Loveless, Inc. has been the pump manufacturer, which the City standardized
around for dry pit type wastewater pump stations. These three wastewater pump stations are still in
service. Utilizing a sole source, such as Smith & Loveless, Inc., allows the City to maintain a reduced
parts inventory, the ability to interchange pumps and parts between wastewater pump stations and
allows staff to be familiar with standard maintenance procedures. Smith & Loveless, Inc. is located in
Kansas and maintains parts for the dry pit type wastewater pump stations.
The proposed wastewater pumps will bolt into place without piping changes or modifications to the
electrical system.
Quotations from Smith & Loveless, Inc. for the f our (4) replacement wastewater pumps delivered to
Salina were received as follows:
WW Pump Station No. 15 $25,202
WW Pump Station No. 29 $21,988
Total: $47,190
FISCAL NOTE:
A budget allocation of $25,000 for Pump Station No. 15 and $25,000 (Total $50,000) for Pump Station
No. 29 for the replacement pumps are included in the 2012 Capital Improvement Program under the
category of Vehicles and Equipment (690-380-190-909.000). Dollars are available for this project in
the Capital Improvement Program.
