4.1 National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
Whereas, childhood cancer is the number one disease killer of children i
United States, killing more children be tween the ages of one and twenty than
asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, and AIDS combined. It is the second leading
cause of death during childhood, ex ceeded only be accidents; and
Whereas, on any given school day approximatel y 46 children ad adolescents, or two
classrooms of students, are diagnosed with cancer; and
Whereas, every year, more than 12,500 chil dren and adolescents are diagnosed
with cancer; and
Whereas, one in every 330 persons in the Un ited States will develop cancer
th
before his or her 20 birthday; and
Whereas, every year over 2,500 children unde r that age of 20 lose their lives to
cancer. That is equivalent to 7 children every single day; and
Whereas, our children are our most precious resource and are truly golden in our
hearts;
Therefore, in recognition of support of the patients, families, and professionals
leading the fight against childhood cancer, I, Samantha P. Angell, Mayor of the city
of Salina, do hereby proclaim September 2011 as

childhood cancer. I encourage all citizens to honor those young people who have
lost their lives to this devastating dise ase and join the fight against childhood
cancer in Salina.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto
set my hand and caused the seal of the City
