ADMINISTRATIVE BRIEF FROM TOM GIRARD Cold Water Rescue Training - Members of all three shifts have completed 8 hours of training which will prepare them for cold water/ice rescue emergencies. The class combined 5 hours of classroom study with 3 hours of training in the water at Lakewood Park. The class was taught by Lt. Calvin Kelsey who had participated in an earlier 3-day cold water rescue training seminar conducted by Dive Rescue International of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The training provided participants with an overview of rescue operation plans plus an opportunity to become familiar with the new equipment which has been purchased for such a rescue. The equipment includes 2 waterproof ice suits, ropes and hand equipment. Participants have expressed surprise at the buoyancy of the suits as well as their warmth and waterproof capabilities. New Recruits - Eight new recruits have completed the 3-week orientation during which they worked 8-hour days. They have now been assigned to a 24-hour shift and are working on Firefighter I training, which requires 150 hours of classroom study plus hands-on experience which, in the Salina Fire Department, surpasses the number of hours ordinarily required for certification. The recruits are all certified EMTs and one is presently attending paramedic classes. The new recruits are: Brent Barton, Jeff Daily, James Forsee, Kelly Hall, Mike Middleton, Jerry Short, Lee Soldan and David Sommerfeld. Station/14 Remodeled--New Apparatus Arriving - The remodeling project at Station #4 is nearing completion in anticipation of delivery of the new quint fire truck which will be housed at that station. Remodeling included the addition of an apparatus bay and service equipment room. The new quint fire track is being built by Smeal Fire Apparatus of Snyder, Nebraska. The term "quint" refers to the five types of equipment provided on the apparatus--a 500 gallon water tank, pump, hose load, ground ladders and 75 feet aerial ladder. The anticipated delivery date is December 20.
