Award of bid for one salt spreader.
BACKGROUND:
Public Works crews currently use steel salt spreaders in providing snow and ice control services for
our community. There are 12 plow trucks with salt spreaders utilized during most storms.
Staff compared the cost, service life, and maintenance of steel salt spreaders with stainless steel
spreaders to determine which provide the best value. The steel spreaders cost about $6,500, plus
$3,500 (sandblasting/reconditioning after six years) or $10,000 for an eight year service life. The steel
spreaders are susceptible to the use of salt and anti-icing chemicals. Stainless steel units cost about
$11,500 and will last 20 years. The stainless steel salt spreaders require less maintenance and
provide a greater value.
On March 11, 2011 staff opened bids for this replacement equipment. The results were as follows:

Funds are available in the 2011 sub-CIP under Vehicles and Equipment in the amount of $14,000 to
make this purchase.

COMMISSION ACTION OR RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Staff recommends the City Commission authorize the purchase of one stainless steel salt spreader
from Midwest Truck Equipment in Wichita, Kansasfor the amount of $11,310.
