ADMINISTRATIVE BRIEF FROM JACK ROLFS
COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY
The Computer Technology Department continues to focus on enhancing the city’s ability to
provide public services through the use of technology. Following are some of the activities we
have been working on since our last update to you in February 2010.
Working with Saline County to install Windows based hardware and software to
replace our current public safety i5 (AS/400) system. This is a very large project
and should be completed in the first part of 2011. The har dware and software
required has been installed and tested.Training is proceeding on schedule. If
anyone wants to see an exam ple of great city/county cooperation, this project
would be a good one to look at.
Continue to virtualize servers by using both VMWare and Xen. Virtualization
allows us to combine many older serv ers onto a few large ones. This saves
money on both hardware and maintenance costs.
Replaced over 30 desktops with newer, upgraded units. We can honestly say that
none of the recipients want their old computers back.
Worked with the Parks and Recreation Department to install thin client machines
at Kenwood Cove. We also assisted with a time clock system for the facility to
help manage the many payroll entries generated by the large number of part-time
help.
In the midst of planning to switch out al l the cellular cards in our public safety
vehicles. This project is proving to have way more roadblocks than we imagined,
but we will win in the end!
Assisted with technological needs at a large FEMA meeting at the Bicentennial
Center. As usual, we worked with Arts and Humanities to allow them access to
needed city programs and files while organizing the River Festival.
