sewage backup complaint 300blk maple 4/20/1979April 20, 1979
TO: Bill Harris, Acting City Manager
FROM: Dean Boyer, Director of Utilities
SUBJECT: Complaints - sewage back up in 300 block of Maple Ave. following
heavy rains
The problem of the sewers backing up into some houses on Maple Avenue
has apparently existed since these houses were built. This is evidenced by
the attached report to you from Ron Webster dated September 9, 1977.
The problem may be caused from two different cppgditions that exists at
this location. First the houses were built so lowAhey did not have suffi-
cient fall to the main sewer lines except under normal flow. Secondly, the
sewers in this area seem to be receiving infiltration of storm watersi, be-
cause they increase in volume following rain storms. The combination'of these
two conditions create5a sewer line with above normal flow which then backs
into the basements which are almost as low as the sewer line.
This condition exists in many parts of town. I personally have owned
two houses where we would get sewer backup if we did not shut the backwater
valve. These houses in the 300 block of Maple Avenue either did not have
their valves shut or their valves were not working properly.
We have considered two alternate permanent solutions for these houses
and the most feasiblq_,one would be to lay a new line for them at a deeper
elevation and take tW' wastes back to the lift station. The cost of this
line would be approximately $15,000.00 exclusive of the owners making con-
nection to it. If you feel this is the best way to goy we could add this line
to an existing contract by change order.
