Administrative BriefVolume 32, No. 19 June 24, 2010 ADMINISTRATIVE BRIEF FROM CONNIE BONFY More Big Ideas – Salina Arts and Humanities Department The sense of teamwork is paying off for the w hole Arts and Humanities Department and we are continuing to extend our impact into the community in new and improved ways. By dividing the workload for Big Ideas into both staff and citizen “goal committee” teams, we have continued to complete the lofty goals of the Big Ideas. Recent ex amples of our services to the larger community include: Continued exploration of a joint community-wide campaign with the Cultural Roundtable members (community cultural agencies, Salina Downtown, Inc, and Visit Salina) to market the arts within the community to help all community members recognize how powerful the arts can be in our everyday lives as well as the utilizing the adoption of the transient guest tax grants as a valuable tool to market to the region and beyond, creating incentives for economic development. Expanded cultural agency int egration into the Smoky Hill River Festival through four downtown temporary installation projects sponsored by t he National Endowment for the Arts. Expanded Smoky Hill River Fest ival pre-festival performances with outreach in Wichita, McPherson, Lucas and Junction City as well as workshops with Ugandan artists Kinobe in Salina at Quail United Methodist Church. Working closely with Salina Symphony to pr esent the orchestra on the Eric Stein stage Friday night at the 2010 Smoky Hill River Festival with Grammy winning guest artists Trio Globo. Upcoming plans include: Expanding Smoky Hill Museum St reet Fair into a one-day, mission-centered event featuring food pantry items, expanded parade, food court, and stage performances. Exploring the oral history of Salina in partnership with Museum, artists, and schools. Expanding Big Ideas Goal IV Committee implementation toward creating studio/workspace downtown. Expanding Big Ideas Goal I Committee im plementation by creating cooperative performances and installations with artists and social service agencies.
