Award contract to paint the exterior of the Kenwood Park Storage Building, Project No. 10-2833.
BACKGROUND:
The Kenwood Cove Aquatic Park design stressed an attractive, inviting, showcase facility for the
citizens of Salina. This design portrays a tropica l theme carried throughout the park in different
features and attractions. We also attempted to make the appearance of the five buildings
aesthetically pleasing in addition to the common theme. The buildings all feature a buff stone
wainscoting, with a coral and buff colored EFIS coating above the stone. The multi colored tile roof is
primarily blue.
The aquatic park is a positive step in the Kenwood and Oakdale discussions and future appearance of
the parks. But one issue city st aff feels needs to be addressed is the appearance of the yellow
storage building jointly owned by the County, City, and USD 305. A su bsequent agenda item is
recommending the city purchase USD 305’s one third ownership. Currently, only the city and county
are utilizing the building for storage. City staff is recommending painting the building to match the
color scheme of the Kenwood Cove buildings. Invita tions to bid were sent to seven area paint
contractors with pre-bid and individual contact made with each. Two bids were received May 27 as
follows:
Yutzy Roofing Company, Nickerson, KS $18,700
Miller Enterprises, Salina, KS $28,896
The architect’s estimate of probable cost was $38,058. Both bids met or exceeded specifications as
written. If approved, the project is to be completed by June 30, 2010.
FISCAL NOTE:
Funds for the painting are ava ilable from the contingency fund included in the aquatic park
construction contract. Since a portion of this building will be used for storage of pool equipment,
aquatic park construction funds may be used for this project without impacting the bonding of the
aquatic park. The Saline County Commission was presented with the architect’s estimate with a
request to participate in one third of the total cost. This request was formally declined. As the actual
costs are significantly lower than the original estimate, a second request has been forwarded to the
County Commission and should be addressed at their Tuesday, June 8 commission meeting.
CONFORMANCE WITH STRATEGIC PLAN
Goal #3 The City will provide the highest quality of services, consistent with governing body direction,
available resources and staff commitment to quality.
