Administrative Brief
COMMISSION INFORMATION MEMORANDUM
VOL. 32 NO. 13 April 22, 2010
ADMINISTRATIVE BRIEF FROM GARY HOBBIE
Development Services Department-Planning & Zoning Division
The Development Services Department, Planning Division, received a notice from the State
Historic Preservation office in March requesting a recommendation for eligibility of the historic
resource for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and the Register of Historic
th
Kansas Places for inclusion of the Christ Church Cathedral located at 138 South 8 Street.
A nomination was desired to recognize the significance of the Cathedral and to make the
resource eligible for various financial incentives relating to future restoration and rehabilitation
activities. The nomination applies to the Cathedral structure only and not for the Parish
House, Education Wing and offices.
Upon presentation of substantial information supporting the designation by city staff, a
favorable vote of the Salina Heritage Commission will allow this request to be forwarded on to
the City Commission for consideration.
Recent Planning Commission meetings have dealt with the annexation and rezoning of a
parcel of land west of I-135 and south of Magnolia Road in a newly platted subdivision named
Magnolia Commons. Final plat and zoning will take effect once the City Commission accepts
the request from the Planning Commission opening up a new commercial development area.
This new area, once sought by Home Depot several years ago, is now under consideration by
another home improvement farm store business.
Three new subdivisions are under consideration by city staff, two of which are located on East
Crawford at the Holmes Road interchange, and the third near the same area of the
community. Preliminary plats and utility layout plans are presently under review. A fourth
newly proposed subdivision is located near the South Ohio and Schilling Road intersection
and would include an area around the former sand pit, after reclamation has been completed.
A second round of appeals for the proposed revised flood plain mapping is being prepared.
City staff has received nearly two dozen additional appeals documents for local citizens to be
sent to FEMA and its mapping partner on their behalf. City staff has not received responses
from the original extensive appeals request submitted on behalf of the Salina community for
the revised flood plan mapping proposed in 2009. FEMA is required to respond in a
reasonable amount of time with no specific date or timeline required. It is still our desire to
have the proposed maps restudied and new maps issued at a later date.
