04-22-1982 Minutes ~~. {t .-l I ,,: ":", 4/1. ~ ',- ... ,. SALINA ARTS COMMISSION April 22, 1982 The Salina Arts Commission met April 22, 1982, in the Commission Gallery. Those present were Commissioners Glenn Ethridge, Anne Nettleton, Pat Neustrom, Tom Poos, Jack Weisgerber, Don Timme1, Chairman; Martha Rhea, Director; Saralyn Reece Hardy, Arts Programmer; Lana Jordan, Operations Manager; Marlys Harris, Secretary, and Julie Eckes, League of Women Voters. The minutes of the March meeting and treasurer's report were approved as presented. Martha then passed. out audit booklets on the Smoky Hill River Festival, Artist in Residence, and Salina Arts Commission, prepared by Woods & Durham, Auditors, for the year ending September, 1981. Festival: a. Martha said that a budget update will be available for next month's meeting. b. The city agreed to underwrite 2/3 of the cost of steel support display panels to be set up under the tents for the artists. c. Martha attended the bed tax meeting earlier in the week and was allocated $2500 for marketing for the Festival. d. MarketAide will be involved in button sales and media advertising and is donating part of its services. e. Sara1yn told us the artists' applications had been juried. Three professional jurors: Maryellen Batt, George Chlebak, and Joe Wedding, looked at slides and judged the works. There is space for only 128 artists and craftspersons, and over 300 applications were received this year. Of those people selected for this year's Festival, 10 were from Salina,. 72 from Kansas, and the others came from 12 other states. Each artist had his choice of being juried into the arts or crafts section. There was a 20% clause which states that no more than 20% of the artists can represent the same media. Jurors will select preferred artists at the Festival also. f. Festival chairmen will be doing interviews on Channel 6 on upcoming Fridays during the 6:00 o'clock news. g. Lana showed the new aprons to be worn by the Festival workers. They will be made in 4-6 bright colors. There are vests for clean-up people and Know-It-Alls. h. Lana showed us an example of the wind socks which have been made by ThermoFlex. There will be flags on the tennis courts and a banner northeast of the gazebo. i. A list of business supporters will be available next month. AIR: a. Saralyn and George Ch1ebak, Kansas Wesleyan, will be doing initial telephone interviewing of prospective environmental artists. All have community experience and a good sense of dealing with the community. Saralyn said that there is great potential for this residency. Martha asked if a Commissioner were interested in serving as a liaison between the community and the artist for interviews, etc. b. A Suzuki flyer was passed out announcing the program for teaching music to small children as easily as learning to talk. A demonstration of the Suzuki method was scheduled for April----at Marymount. Municipal Band: Earl Van C1eefis letter proposing the 1982 budget for the Municipal Band was submitted. The season will open at the Smoky Hill River Festival, followed by weekly Tuesday night concerts at Oakdale Park, 7 p.m., thereafter. Kansas City Philharmonic: Invitations to the Kansas City Philharmonic concert and Salina Country Club buffet were handed out. The Philharmonic will present a concert for the public on Sunday, May 2, at 4 p.m. and a children's concert on v .~ "", . .. ~ . Monday, May 3, at 10 a.m. at' the Bicentennial Center. Music had been selected especially for the large arena area. Out of town, KSAL, and Journal advertising had begun. Other Projects: Evelyn Petros was in Salina, April 20 - 25, She appeared at Art a la Carte on Friday and Presbyterian Manor on Sunday, among other activities. Evelyn is a mezzo-soprano, sponsored by Union Pacific Railroad in conjunction with Affiliated Artists. National Endowment for the Arts Meeting: Martha said that Mid-America Arts Alliance had been asked by the National Endowment for the Arts Office of Partner- ship to explain the partnership concept among the federal, regional, state, and local levels, with the private sector, at the National Council meeting in Washington. The Salina Arts Commission was being featured as an effective example of a local arts agency in this partnership relationship. usn 305 Funding: The Commissioners were shown the letter sent to usn 305 requesting $5500, the same amount as last year, for the 1982-83 school year. 1983 City Request: Martha said that the budget requests to the City for 1982 are to show no increase over 1982. A budget will be available at the next Commission meeting. Martha will be serving as a consultant for the Colorado Councils for the Arts and Humanities in Denver April 29 - May 1. The Council and Colorado Arts Councils are exploring a formal consortium structure like ACACK. Glenn Ethridge said that the Salina Chorale will present a concert April 30 at Kansas Wesleyan, 8 p.m. Tickets are available from Chorale members and local music stores. This will be the last Salina public appearance of Nancy Statton. Meeting adjourned.
