STEP FORWARD
TAKE A STAND AGAINST RAPE
Denim Day Proclamation
WHEREAS, SALINA steps forward to take a stand against rape; and
WHEREAS, there are sexual assault prevention and education efforts underway throughout
SALINA and the nation to challenge the societal myths and behaviors that perpetuate rape
and to engage communities in a common goal of ending sexual assault; and
WHEREAS, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month;
and
WHEREAS, International Denim Day has been observed since April 1999 as a symbol of
protest in response to an Italian High Court decision to overturn a rape conviction because
the victim wore jeans. Every year since, community members, elected officials, businesses
and students have organized to make a social statement with their fashion statement and
wear jeans as a visible means of protest against myths that surround sexual assault; and
WHEREAS, SALINA is dedicated to support the Denim Day initiative as there is no excuse
and never an invitation to rape; and
WHEREAS, the Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas has worked to coordinate
Denim Day 2009
NOW THEREFORE, I, John K. Vanier, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF SALINA, do hereby
proclaim April 30, 2009 as
DENIM DAY
