4.1 Fire Prevention Week PROCLAMATION Fire Safety is enhanced when family and friends actively join together with firefighters as a fire safety team. Effective fire safety depends on planning, action and teamwork. Salina Fire Department's members are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention, protection, and education. Salina's residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fires, especially in their homes; and Residents who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are more prepared and will therefore be more likely to survive a fire; the 2009 Fire Prevention Week theme; "Stay Fire Smart! Don't Get Burned" effectively serves to remind us all of the simple actions we can take to stay safer from fire during Fire Prevention Week and year-round. The Salina Fire Department is dedicated to saving life and property from the devastating effects of fire. The members of the fire service are joined by other concerned citizens as well as businesses, schools, service clubs and other organizations in their fire safety efforts. The local efforts of the fire service are supported by the activities organizations such as the American Burn Association, the American Red Cross, the Center for Disease Control, the Congressional Fire Service Institute, the Fire Marshal's Association of North America, the International Association of Arson Investigators, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the International Association of Fire Fighters, the National Fire Protection Association, the National Association of State Fire Marshal's, the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, the National Volunteer Fire Council, and the United States Fire Administration. NOW, THEREFORE, 1M. Luci Larson, Mayor of the City of Salina, County of Saline and State of Kansas, do hereby proclaim the week of October 4th_10th, 2009, as FIRE PREVENTION WEEK in Salina. This week commemorates the "Great Chicago Fire" of October 8, 1871, which killed more than 250 persons, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 buildings. I call upon the people of Salina, Kansas to participate in fire prevention activities at home, work, and school and to install smoke detectors and practice home fire drills to ensure their safety and the safety of their families in the event of a fire.
