Whereas, the month of September 2009 will be declared as Salina Alcohol and Drug Addiction
Month; and
Whereas, substance use disorders are serious and treatable health problems and as many as 63
percent of Americans say that addiction to alcohol or other drugs has had an impact on them at
some point in their lives, whether it was addiction of a friend, employee, employer, family member
or another experience, such as their own personal addiction; and
Whereas, assessing our citizen's needs for addiction treatment and referring them to appropriate
treatment and their family members to support services is a crucial first step in helping people
realize that recovery is possible and treatment is effective; and
Whereas, barriers to accessing treatment programs, that can help heal lives, families and our
community are a significant problem for our neighbors, friends, co-workers, and family members
with substance use disorders; and
Whereas, community members seeking treatment deserve affordable, individualized treatment
programs; and
Whereas, recognizing those who seek treatment services for alcohol and drug use disorders, as well
as those who have helped them obtain treatment, helps to overcome barriers by educating the
community about the benefits of treatment, celebrating their successes, and affirming the goal that
all people with alcohol and drug use disorders should have access to treatment services; and
Whereas, to help achieve this goal, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the White House Office of National
Drug Control Policy, Kansas Citizens' Committee on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse, and the
Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, Disability and Behavioral Health
Services, Addiction and Prevention Services, Ashby House, Innovative Solutions Addiction
Treatment Center, Veridan Behavioral Health, Comprehensive Counseling, Breakthrough, St.
Francis Community Services, and Central Kansas Foundation invite all residents of Kansas to
participate in NATIONAL ALCOHOL AND DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY MONTH.
Therefore, I, M. Luci Larson, Mayor of the City of Salina, Kansas do hereby proclaim the month of
September 2009 as
Salina Alcohol and Drug Addiction Month
I do urge all Salina citizens to honor this observance by participating in appropriate activities and
ceremomes.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and
