OFFICIAL PROCLAMATION
City of Salina
WHEREAS: The first full week of May has, for over seventy years, been
set aside as the national week acknowledging our responsibility
for the care and protection of animals; and
WHEREAS: A great many Salina citizens receive enjoyment and other benefits
from our household pets or from pet visitors in the Humane
Association's program to nursing homes;.and
WHEREAS: The Saline County Humane Association has again organized special
events throughout the community during the week, including a
"Blessing of the Animals" service and visits to city schools with
programs for young Salina citizens on responsible pet ownership
and respect for wildlife; and
WHEREAS: The Humane Association is supported in this effort by representa-
tives of the City-County Animal Shelter, the Smoky Hills Audubon
Society, the Salina Kennel Club, Saline County veterinarians and
other individuals; and
WHEREAS: The Humane Association has again chosen a well-tended Salina pet
for posters to be displayed during.the week;
NOW, THEREFORE: I, Stephen C. Ryan, as Mayor of the City of Salina, do
hereby proclaim the week of May 3-9, 1987, as BE KIND TO .ANIMALS
WEEK and heartily commend to all our citizens a year-long
commitment to the spirit of the week.
