RE: Staff Training - Hearing Impaired Sensitivity Training
On March 24 and March 27, 1995 a total of forty-six employees attended training to
address the needs of citizens with hearing impairments. The training was conducted by
Teresa Rundell and Judy Brown of OCCK.
Suggestions on how to effectively communicate and serve the customer needs of those
with hearing impairments included the following:
- Tap on the shoulder, from the front or side, to get their attention
- Keep your face in view
- Speak to the person, not the interpreter
- If you need to write something down, go ahead
- Don't mutter, speak clearly
- Don't yell
- Speak naturally
- Make sure mustaches are trimmed
- During presentations, repeat group questions, then answer
- Use round table settings for group discussions
- Talk one at a time
- Remember that the Kansas Relay Service repeats verbatim
- If purchasing a Text Telephone, purchase a unit with four rows
The training was well received and appreciated by the employees.
