Administrative Brief COMMISSION INFORMATION MEMORANDUM VOL. 24, NO. 22 ADMINISTRATIVE BRIEF FROM JIM HILL July 12, 2002 DARE CAMP - Our annual DARE camp was held once again at Camp Webster the week of June 24, with 204 campers (a new record) in attendance. The Thursday night family picnic resulted in another record number, as 560 campers, their parents and relatives feasted on hamburgers and hotdogs. With the exception of a few sutures (and a number of exhausted officers who are convinced that 5th and 6th graders never sleep) the camp was a huge success. METH LABS - While we continue to purchase and seize large quantities of methamphetamine this year, at prices as alarmingly low as $9,500 per pound, we have experienced a dramatic decrease in the number of meth lab seizures. Nineteen meth labs were seized during the first six months of 2002; a stark contrast to the 19 labs seized during the month of January 2001 alone. This significant decrease was predictable, and it is a trend that normally follows two years of very aggressive enforcement. The majority of methamphetamine sold in Salina today is produced in super labs in Mexico. The pound of meth that wholesales for $9,500 in Salina will retail for more than $45,000 when sold by the gram. Wholesale prices this low clearly indicates that they're in an abundant supply of methamphetamine available in our community. PROJECT SALINA - Members of the police department and municipal court view Project Salina as a very worthwhile way to give something back to the community that they serve. In what has become a proud tradition and spirited fundraising competition between the various organizational units, I am pleased to report that police and court employees have donated more than $9,300 in cash to the City's Project Salina efforts over the last three years.
