The 1987 Vehicle and Equipment Fund includes the purchase of an Aerial
Manlift to be used in the Forestry program. This acquisition had been
scheduled for purchase in the 4th quarter. Due to accidents and
numerous equipment failures, an inspec%ion was ordered this spring. The
inspection report determined the unit unsafe for operation in its
present condition with estimated costs of repairs in the $15,000-$20,000
range. Consequently, staff has discontinued use of this equipment,
thereby suspending the pruning and deadwooding project undertaken this
year. For the department to continue forestry projects this year, we
have requested this purchase be permitted at this time.
The City owns a 1974 2-ton truck which the old unit was mounted; several
companies will not mount their unit as specified on our vehicle due to
the axle rating, but two companies will change the axle and install
their lift. The'City owned truck currently has a 5000 lb. rated axle
and most companies specify a 7000 lb. rated axle.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends purchasing an aerial lift from Teco, Inc., for $32,802.
This cost included the Teco company changing the 5000'1b. front axle to
a 7000 lb. axle. 1989 Vehicle & Equipment budgeted $40,000 for this
item.
