Caldwell to address the City Commission concerning the Carver Center proposal, CGt~ISS ION ACTION MOTION BY SECOND BY TO: Honorable r~qyor Joe ~mer, City commisssioners My concern today is to comment on the use of the various Community centers and their usefulness to the Uommunity as places of meeting . ~. for the many concerned citizens of Salina, For the past 50 years the use of Carver Center has served the minority members of the Community as a meeting place and a area that was created not specifically but mainly for the Black Citizens of Salina, and until recent years it is the designated center for all groups to use,.,which certainly and rightfully so and not for a certain group but for the use of all concerne~ As we come before the Salina city ~ommission to present our gzpviousis as well :5'vote of thanks to yu6 for your many concez~s in helping our citer live up to the recent Title, "SALINA TH~ALL~%Iv~RICAN City" Our concerrn today is if we are to live out that title we do not want any of our citizens deprived of the use of ~"f~}acilities because thatislac~ the funds ~%~t° continue~//~~ O~ use them as a meetig place in the future. ~e would like for ~o~o consider continuin~ the use of the facilities on a non-fee basis as they have~een in past. My other concerns are tha~the facilities in the past few years were the results of Block Grant Funds created under the H U D for the use of the less fortunate and to let them realize that the money set aside was not set aside to segregate but to the uplifting of ~.~ l{ that were not .fortunate enough to cre. ate their'own.~ Today we see the country~,rev~ersing the many ~ decisions that has been the backbone of giving our country the right of all citizens to enjoy especially the minorities and the Womenl of our great .coun.t~y, nam Civil rights legislation, Affirmatiw~ Actio~et aside Mzr~Ormmy-~tracts Let u~ keep the City on the move, Your city of opporyunity and the~ity that works, for the good of all its Worthy citizens and not the chosen few.
