AGENDA SECTION: Administration ORIGINATING OEPARTNENT: APPROVED FOR AGENDA: NO. 8 Fire Department NO- 5 BY: Tom Girard The EMS'Division of the Salina Fire Department has a need to update some of the equipment used for patient care. Two of the three heart monitors/defibrillators currently being used were purchased in 1980, the other one was purchased in 1983. Department staff has researched various options in this equipment up-date. One new option now available is the addition of a cardiac pacer built into a combination monitor/defibrillator. Recommended Action: The Commission approve the purchase of three (3) Moll-P.D. Non-invasive Pacemaker/Defibrillator from Moll-MMI Corporation, ~oburn, M~ for a pur- chase.price of $21,000. Cunningham Park Local Sales Representative: Woburn, MA 01801 Michael Emery Unit Requested: Zoll-P.D. Non-invasive Pacemaker/Defibrillator Cost (list price): $8,500 each 3 units requested 3 units X $8,500 = $25,500 Cost (as agreed): $7,000 each 3 units requested 3 units X $7,000 = $21,000 Warranty: Two (2) years -- Loaner provided within 24 hours if repairs are necessary. Asbury Salina Regional Medical Center's Emergency Room has recently purchased two (2) of the Zoll-P.D. units for use in their department. St. John's Hospi- tal is also looking at this unit for use in their Emergency Room. This would mean that both the E.M.S. and the hospital Emergency Rooms would have the same equipment, making it unnecessary to change equipment when a patient is released to the Emergency Room staff for further care. This is not currently possible because of equipment incompatibility. ALTERNATIVE EQUIPMENT Physio Control Corporation 11811 Willows Road, N.E. The Life-Pak 5 units currently used by our department are getting old and should be replaced. Two of our units were purchased in 1980. Whenever re- pairs are necessar~ the units must be shipped to Independence, Missouri. Physio-Contol now charges $98 per hour for repairs. We have had excellent results and good service from these units throughout the years but they are getting old and seem to need repairs more and more often. Proposed Pacemaker/Defibrillator February 15, 1989 Page #2 WHY PACERS ARE NEEDED In 1986 the American Heart Association specified the use of External Transcu- taneous Pacing in the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) protocols. The E.M.S. Division has accepted these protocols as our own. However, we have not had the equipment to do 'pacing' in the field as recommended. Div. Chief Joe Knott has approached the Emergency Room Committee, which over- s~es and approves all protocols for E.M.S., on this matter. It is their strong recommendation that we obtain this much needed equipment, train our paramedics in its use, and start 'pacing' in the field, following ACLS protocols.
