'AGENOA SECTION: ..~ Administration ORIGINATING OEPAR'~ENT: APPROVED FOR NO. 8 Fire Department AGENOA: NO. 10 ~ BY: Tom Girard BY: The Salina Fire Department is scheduled to. replace an automobile in the first quarter of 1989. $15,000 was approved in the equip- ment replacement account. During work sessions with the City Manager and City Staff held in mid November of 1988, it was discussed that there could possibly be a savings if the City tried to purchase a good low mileage demo or rental vehicle that had good maintenance records and full warranty available, rather than going to bid on a 1989 vehicle. The Fire Department Staff has contacted the following automobile dealers and receiyed price quotations on several low milage 1988 automobiles that meet the general specifications that best meet the department's needs being -- a mid size 6 cylinder front wheel drive 4 door sedan with a large trunk capacity and good accessi- bility to the equipment carried in the trunk: Bennett Pontiac Long Mckrthur Ford Warta Buick Waddell Cadillac-Olds In December of 1988, unit #497, the 1979 Ford wagon scheduled for replacement, started having transmission problems. It was our decision to park the vehicle rather than spend the estimated $700 to repair the transmission. This decision has put the department one vehicle short in the Fire Prevention Division. .After review of the proposals from the automobile dealers on the 1988 model vehicles, we feel a savings of $1,000 to $1,500 can be realized over drawing up specifications and going to bid on a · 1989 model car. Staff Recomendations Purchase the 1988 Red Delta 88 Olds from Waddells for a trade price of $12,960. This vehicle has 5,000 miles on it and has not been titled, thus the full warranty would be available. COmmISSION ACTION ~0TION 8Y SECON0 8Y TO:
