4.4 Sonny Slater Week WHEREAS, Sonny Slater has been a part of the Salina Community and
Central Kansas since January, 1950; and
WHEREAS, He has served as Farm News Director for Radio Station
KSAL for more than 40 years; and
WHEREAS, He has become the voice of Central Kansas Agriculture; and
WHEREAS, Sonny and his wife Esther have been active Saline County
farmers, r~!.~ing and educating five children in a close
family atmosphere; and
WHEREAS, Sonny has gone from a tall, skinny cowboy-hatted
entertainer to a robust, crew-cut farm broadcasting legend
over his career; and
WHEREAS, He has been recognized by numerous farm organizations for
his skills, and his loyalty to Kansas agriculture, and
agriculture and its problems in general; and
WHEREAS, He has awakened untold thousands of Salinans and Central
Kansas with his "plum-goodin'" weather comments; and
WHEREAS, Sonny is retiring from active broadcasting May 25, 1990,
and will go into full-tlme farming and ranching in Lyon
County, Kansas with members of his family.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert E. Frank, Mayor of the City
of Salina, hereby declare the week of May 21 through May
26, 1990 as
Sonny Slater Week
