Consider Authorization to Remodel Former Animal Shelter Building as a Possible
Animal Adol~tion Center. (Health Department Director Paul Richardson to exl~lai~).
Background:
You may recall that some time ago we discussed at a study session an idea from a
local resident who wished to donate funds and volunteer time to establish an
"Adoption Center" in conjunction with our animal shelter. At that time, the proposal
was quite complex, and involved some significant new construction at the existing
shelter building. Since that time, the concept has been revised to involve
only the rep~i? and remocleliUg of the older building (now used only for minor
storage).
The concept as it now stands involves no City funcli~g, either for remodeling and
repair or oporations. The donors, current and future, would cover all expenses,
The Board of Health would review and. consider this program under their own
authority to administer progt~m~ in the animal shelter operations.
As. noted, the details of any adoption center proposal or program have not been
worked out, but the Board of Health has first requested your action in approving the
possible remodeling of this surplus building.
Recommended Action:
1. Tentatively authorize remodeling of the abandoned animal shelter building (at no
City expense), assuming program agreement is approved by the Salina-Saline
County Board of Health.
2. Direct the City Manager to coordinate these efforts with the Health Department
Director.
